Mental and Emotional Benefits of a Healthy Living & Working Space

Décor and blessing the spaces I am in and the objects I own are seen as a spiritual practice and a way I hold space to practice self-love and self-care. Reframing the way, I see taking care of the spaces I am in offers a positive perspective on how I see maintaining my space through chores such as cleaning, clearing, decluttering, and organizing to make it a functional environment. Instead of feeling like this is an obligation and something not enjoyed or needing to be rushed through, I take this space to quiet the mind, be present fully within the moment, practice affirmations, prayer, or contemplation. I find this then to be a soothing, relaxing, and positive experience that also gives the opportunity for creativity and gratitude to reflect on how fortunate we are to have the incredible beauty of art and so many manmade tools that offer us functionality and ease within our lives.

Having a lovely space around us, whether it is at home or in the office, can have several benefits for our well-being and productivity. Here are a few of them:

1. Reduces stress and anxiety: A pleasant environment can help to reduce stress and anxiety levels, allowing us to feel more relaxed and at ease. When we are surrounded by things, we find beautiful and appealing, it can help us to feel happier and more content.

2. Boosts productivity: A well-designed environment can help to boost productivity and creativity. When we are in a space that is organized and aesthetically pleasing, it can help us to feel more motivated and focused on our tasks.

3. Improves mood: Surrounding ourselves with things we love can improve our mood and overall sense of well-being. It can bring us joy and a sense of comfort, making us feel more content and satisfied with our surroundings.

4. Enhances physical health: A clean and well-maintained environment can help to enhance our physical health. It can reduce the likelihood of illness and allergies, and create a safer and healthier space for us to live and work in.

Overall, creating a lovely space around us can have a positive impact on our mental and physical health, productivity, and overall quality of life.

Tips on Creating a Therapeutic Office

In this video, we are at my office location, and I wanted to give a tour showing the setup, talk about some important details about creating a therapeutic and healing office space, and offer some styling and decorative ideas within the space. When I was getting ready to set up my office, I loved looking at office spaces online and on Pinterest to get some inspiration so if you are in the process of setting up your space or looking to revamp, I hope this may offer some ideas to help get you started.

Lobby Area

Seating
Offer comfortable seating and enough seating for the clients you will be serving.

- bench & chair: Wayfair

- mirror: At Home

- wall decor: Home Goods & World Market

  • on the side table, I have some chocolates, lotion, Kleenex, some positive quote books, light reads & these cool books that people can look up an interpretation of spirit animals, their zodiac, karmic destiny, birthday, and names. These books are very insightful, one was gifted by a client, and I found the others at home goods and amazon.

Books

Aromatherapy

Consider a mild & neutral room spray, candle, candle warmer, or diffuser to create a comforting and welcoming fragrance. These are my favorite & a lot of compliments are received on the way the office space smells.

Coffee Bar & Water Station
  • It is preferred to offer filtered water because it tastes fresh, is cooled, and is a healthy alternative to tap water: I use this one here

  • The water cooler is cleaned every six months and I use this cleaning kit

  • An assortment of teas, coffees (different flavors & decaf), and warm beverages such as apple cider, cappuccino, & hot chocolate are made available.

  • I use a Keurig for the beverage pods.

  • Honey, stevia, and sugar are also made available for beverages.

  • I take my used cups home to wash in the dishwasher for sanitary purposes and have two bins one for clean and dirty dishes, I bring the bin for clean dishes home and wash this in the dishwasher each time I am bringing clean cups in. I use a towel over the clean cups when bringing them back in to avoid anything getting on them during transportation. I use this dish drying rack

  • I use a cabinet as the base for storage of office mints, chocolates, cleaning supplies, and the beverages.

Offering someone a beverage can be a simple yet significant gesture that can help to create a positive atmosphere and build relationships. It can demonstrate hospitality, warmth, and respect, and can help to make the other person feel more comfortable and at ease.

  1. Hospitality and warmth: Offering someone a beverage is a way of extending hospitality and warmth. It shows that you are welcoming and hospitable, and that you value the other person's presence and comfort.

  2. Building rapport: Offering someone a beverage can help to build rapport and create a connection. It can be a simple gesture that helps to establish a positive relationship with the other person, which can lead to better communication and collaboration.

  3. Comfort and relaxation: Offering a beverage can create a sense of comfort and relaxation. It can help to ease any tension or nerves that the other person may be feeling and create a more relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.

  4. Cultural significance: Offering a beverage can also have cultural significance, depending on the context and the beverage being offered. In some cultures, offering tea or coffee is a sign of respect and hospitality, while in others, offering alcohol may be a way of celebrating or socializing.

Lobby Music

Consider playing music in the seating area while clients wait for their appointment.

  • Offer neutral music that is calming & soothing.

  • I play meditation station on Amazon music or Pandora.

  • I have also included a Pandora playlist of healing music that is not just instrumentals but offers a therapeutic quality to them if you prefer to offer more options to your soundtrack then just spa music.

Safety & Security

A hidden feature on the coffee bar is the ring panic button in the event of a safety concern.

During clinical practicum they taught us some safety features in setting up your office space and to make sure you are sitting closest to the door rather than having clients sitting there in the event you need to exit quickly to avoid a client being right there and blocking the exit. Now this isn’t possible in all spaces and in this waiting area this isn’t an option. If someone were to come in and I have no way of removing myself with them standing in front of the door way it can lead to a concerning situation quickly so on the side of my coffee bar I have a panic button that will sound off a very loud alarm and I got this monitoring system installed and requested a permit to the local police department so after its triggered it will notify them and local authorities will be immediately dispatched to this location.

I have two other areas where there are panic buttons installed in the main office area as well. I think these safety features are very important to consider and I plan to make a separate video going deeper into this and some of the safety concerns that healers and healthcare providers can come up against working in human services. If you have interest in this information, please subscribe to the email list to be notified when it is available.

  • This is the Ring Alarm System used.

  • A second self-defense option are these personal alarms, they are not connected to local authorities, but the sound can be heard from afar and is very alarming.

Paperwork, Business Cards, & Signage
  • On a shelf under the clock, I have business cards & magnets made available.

  • Since I am a single provider in my office space and do not have a receptionist, I have a wire mail basket that has a clipboard with the intake paperwork in it.

  • I also have a sign next to it, instructing new clients to complete this paperwork if they didn’t do it electronically.

(the one shown is from Hobby Lobby)

  • Another important sign hung on the office door is informing others that I am in session and to please have a seat. I wanted to make sure I had a door sign that could be right out front in case clients got to their appointment early and would knock or if I had a delivery or another business meeting setup that I wouldn’t be available for until my session was over.

Sound Proofing

One thing about this space that might not be apparent is the separating wall between the lobby and main office. This was installed as a soundproof wall. This feature is one of the most helpful features of this space. Working in three other buildings before being in this space there was an ongoing issue of being able to hear disruptive outside noises, laughter, or conversations of others walking by or being able to hear very personal disclosures or crying. This was so disruptive as the provider but also was not comforting for the clients who could literally hear what the person was sharing about a very personal situation or health related disclosure from the other room. It created distraction and interruption even with the use of light music and a sound machine which just didn’t cut it. If it is possible, I would explore ways to soundproof the space you are working in.

Main Office

  • I have a large cabinet to use for decor as well as storage. This is a space where I keep clean cups, jugs of water, dirty dishes, snacks, a refrigerator, a toaster oven, and spiritual items & stress management tools to offer clients. All of the spiritual and stress management products are for free and aren’t sold to those I work with.

  • I have a closed waste basket to use for tea bags or food items & a closed waste basket used for recycling.

  • Intention setting practices are done at the start of each session with clients and you can see more about those details in the video.

  • It is helpful to provide comfortable chairs for clients to relax or feel comfortable in during session. The chairs used, also recline & some find this to be a helpful option when doing deeper meditative work.

  • I keep a long yoga bolster behind the chairs as an aid when doing restorative yoga poses with clients or for clients who are shorter in stature to have under their feet, so they have a sense of feeling grounded instead of having their legs hanging down.

  • I have this sound machine also behind the chairs to help fill the space with a soft ambiance of sound.

  • I also have light meditation music playing in the background of the session. This is something I use more for myself as a soothing & grounding aid to remain centered and present within the space because this type of music helps calm my nerves & relax but it is also pleasant for clients. These are my favorite background songs to play.

  • It's helpful to make sure you have clocks positioned somewhere within your peripheral vision to make it easy to watch the time. If you have a clock positioned somewhere that is obvious when you look at it, it can be disruptive to the session and also unintentionally indicate to the client that you are bored or are preoccupied with when the session will be over. when we are holding space for others we want to be as respectful to that sacred healing space as we can and be present without being focused on diverting our attention elsewhere to keep track of the time. Now of course it's important to stay on top of managing your time but this helps do it in a tactful way.

  • It's helpful to have a coffee table or stand next to the client's seat so they have a space for their drink, have access to mints or chocolates, & Kleenex.

  • It's also helpful to have a small stand sitting next to your chair for your drink, paper and pen, chapstick, & for an Ipad if you use this as a part of your practice. I also keep a crystal to hold on to to help with grounding if I need it during a session and I usually have an essential oil roller to use as an aid for deep breathing in between sessions to help relax and stay centered.

  • I use an essential oil diffuser in the main office area similar to this one.

  • I diffuse bergamot, lavender, or spearmint.

  • Other helpful office supplies to consider:

- a locked cabinet (I added legs, a glass top, & handles to the one you see in the tour)

- bookbag I try to keep my hands free when walking in and out of the building and this gives me a spot to put my water bottle, computer, laptop, healing devices, my planner, and any other books and things I want to take home with me.

Decor Features within the Space

  • Water fountain feature: this offers a calming therapeutic sound & is visually calming. Similar one seen in the office tour:

  • Other than that, the only thing not shown in this video is the seasonal décor. Decorating and beautiful aesthetic and décor is something I really enjoy so at the start of each season to change the space up and create a new atmosphere within the space, I like to add in new seasonal pieces and remove the other seasonal décor.

Blessing & Clearing the Space

At the beginning of the day, I perform a psychic & energetic spiritual protection practice to keep excess energy out of my aura and chakras from internal & externals sources. I also do an intention setting practice to center myself within the space and to align within the moment to offer an experience of healing catalyst for others. I bless the space as well and cleanse the space in between each session and at the end of the day to ensure others are not walking into a heavy energetic environment from spiritual, emotional and mental energy that was there from another's energy field.

I plan to make an in-depth post and video explaining fully what this looks like. If this interests you, be sure to subscribe to the email list to be notified when this comes out.

Healy Device

I also plan to make a video discussing the healing practices & devices that I use to support the healing experience. One of those devices mentioned in the video is the Healy Device.

The Healy is a microcurrent medical device that has been cleared by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration for relief of acute, chronic, and arthritis pain and muscle soreness due to overexertion. Healy also has non-medical applications that use individualized frequencies to help balance your mind and body, relieve stress, and support vitality and well-being. The Individualized Microcurrent Frequency (IMF) programs of the Healy device are not medical applications. They are not intended to cure, treat, mitigate, diagnose, or prevent any disease or medical condition.

I am an Independent Healy World Member and if you have interest in purchasing a Healy device you can use my link.
